Bay Area writers: call for submissions

Hi, friends! I just received this call for submissions and wanted to share ... looks like a neat opportunity if you're in the Bay Area!

Peninsula Literary will present the next reading on Friday, September 12, at 7:00 p.m. David Roderick and Alice LaPlante will be featured.

To round out our lineup, we're now accepting fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry submissions for 5-7 minute guest reading slots.  The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, August 12, 2014.

Submission Guidelines:

1.  Original poetry or prose – please include all submitted materials, along with your bio, in the body of your email. Submissions may additionally include pdf or Word attachments, but all pieces must appear in the main email message or they will be returned. 

2.  No more than 7 minutes total reading time (2-4 poems or 3-3.5 pages of double-spaced prose, 12 pt. text).

3.  Include your name, phone number, and preferred email.

4.  Please send all submissions via email to Carrie and Jean at peninsulaliterary@gmail.com.

Shorthand is looking for young Canadian writers between the ages of 16-25 to submit work for publication on-line in their New Voices special section. The deadline is the 15th of the month prior to publication. (Example: October 15th for a November publication) Writing must be in English from a resident of Canada, original, never published or produced, 2,500 words or less for fiction or non-fiction and 75 lines or less for poems (up to 3 poems can be submitted). Plays must be short or a one-scene excerpt.

Chicken Soup has extended the deadline for their preteens book until October 31! And they need great stories. Act fast and you could be published in Chicken Soup for the Soul's newest book for preteens, scheduled for publication in August 2011.

Here is info from the Chicken Soup editors:

What was your experience like as a preteen? We want to know. We're still collecting true stories and poems about your preteen years, written in the first person, of no more than 1,200 words. Stories should not have been previously published by Chicken Soup for the Soul or other major publications. These must be your personal stories - things that happened to you or someone you were close to.

Your stories or poems need to be true and about your personal experiences or those of someone close to you. We prefer stories written in the first person and no more than 1,200 words. This book will be published in English so please submit stories in English. Stories should not have been previously published by Chicken Soup for the Soul or other major publications.

Here are some suggested topics, but we know you can think of many more:
